THE ORIGINS OF CROCHET
IMG_5155

Crocheting (crochet = hook) is a technique which allows someone to make fabric with a single thread through the use of a needle which ends up in a hook. The story of crocheting is a mystery in itself. No one knows exactly when it began and only very little ancient crochet pieces have been saved, as they were made of natural materials which decomposed at the course of time. The most ancient piece of crochet, however, dates back to 100 A.D. and was found in Syria.

Despite the fact that crocheting is traditionally considered a female occupation, the first traders were men and had to undergo six-year training so as to be allowed to practice crocheting.

In Greece there is no house without handmade crochet artworks. We can all remember our grandmothers crocheting, mainly socks or tablecloths. It is also a traditional custom for the female members of the family to gift crochet pieces to younger girls when they get married.

The act of making handmade crochet articles for someone is an act of love and care, as it requires a lot of effort and patience and also because these creations last forever. Ubuntu makes them for you.
